Helping clinicians beat burnout & bulletproof their bag—1 journal entry at a time.
Journal Entry 8 on May 15, 2025 I missed my newsletter post on yesterday. Between church, Mother’s Day, church meetings, my own personal group therapy session, client sessions and personal appointments I could not fit it in. The difference between my old self and the woman I am today is that I choose self-compassion, and I refute the intrusive thoughts. This makes me think about the power of choice as I reflect on what one of my client’s shared with me. Mom stated that my chocolate chip was sad, depressed and did not want to go to school. It reminded me of my school days on how depressed I used to get. I keenly remember how everything in life at that time was such as big deal: teachers, peers grades, recess, etc. I could not see the forest from the trees in spite of the good things that occurred. I used to catastrophes situations turning molehills into mountains. Some will say I had a pessimistic attitude even at that age 12 as my client. As I listened to my mom share about my chocolate chip, I had to guard my heart from judging mom who kept her home from school. Intrusive ThoughtsOf course, I had many questions that came a mile a minute. What?
A mental health day because she is sad?
Does the school know why she missed school?
Do we need to have a meeting with the counselor and the teacher?
What is really going on?
Do we want mom to think this behavior is appropriate?
How can we support my chocolate chip so she can come to school everyday to get her education?
After reflecting on these questions, a compassionate and empathetic question arose: How dare I want mom to make her child go to school when I will remain home when I sad and need a mental health day. This is where my B.E.A.T. Burnout Framework makes sense. The B.E.A.T. Burnout FrameworkHere’s the strategy that I use when I am depressed and need to take a mental health day. ✅Schedule clients later in the evening to give me time to regroup doing the day ✅If I can pull myself together, then I force myself to make some money for the day instead of no money. ✅I schedule appointments for the next day to keep a money-making mindset. ✅I watch one of my favorite shows on Prime or Netflix.
